MIDDLE SCHOOL

Dear MS Parents, Students, and Staff,

Welcome to this week’s update from Lincoln Middle School! Our goal is to keep you informed, celebrate our students, and strengthen our partnership as we support our students’ growth.

Reminder - MS Learning Expeditions:

Our MS Learning Expeditions start on Tuesday.  An email with additional details has been sent home today, including a QR code to join our trip WhatsApp groups.  Please take time to carefully review all the information and help your child pack according to the packing list.  A couple of important highlights:

  • Monday morning - March 2:  All students on any of the trips need to bring their ORIGINAL (not copy) travel ID to the MS office.  This will allow us to prepare all of the documentation for our early departure times on Tuesday.
  • Grade 6 arrive to school time - Tuesday:  5:00 a.m.
  • Grades 7 & 8 arrive to school time - Tuesday:  6:30 a.m.
  • All grades local activities and trips:  Regular school hours - 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Homework Agendas:

All MS students have a homework journal, either an electronic one using a template that we have provided or a paper one.  This semester we are focusing on helping students to develop organizational and self navigation skills through accurate tracking of their homework and other important reminders. Ask your child to show you which they are using at home and help us to encourage the use of this important organization tool.

Pink Shirt Day:

This week we celebrated Pink Shirt Day across the school.  Pink Shirt Day occurs on the last Wednesday in February every year. The purpose of Pink  Shirt Day is to create a more kind and inclusive world by raising awareness and money  for anti-bullying programs. Students learned about this anti-bullying movement and reflected on how they can contribute to a safe, bully free environment at school.  To support students and show their commitment to teach anti-bullying values, MS teachers also wore pink and posed for a group photo at the end of the day.

Focus on Learning

Grade 6 EAL Meets the press - Poetry in Action: Grade 6 EAL students enjoyed an inspiring poetry session on February 20 led by Hilary Burke, a former Reuters journalist, professional translator, and editor. With many years of experience writing and editing for a living, Hilary recently completed a course in poetry and now enjoys sharing her passion for poetry analysis with young people.

During the session, students revisited various poetic styles and literary devices while exploring works by American and Chinese authors. To cap off the experience, students wrote their own poems to be added to the growing portfolios they have been developing throughout this unit. It was a wonderful opportunity for the class to take their learning "outside the classroom" and gain insights from a seasoned professional.

Thank you Dr. Faze for helping us make this session happen!

Grade 8 Product Design - Students Design and Prototype Automata Toys: Grade 8 Product Design students are currently prototyping their own mechanical automata toys. The project began with creative brainstorming and detailed sketches on paper, where students planned their characters and explored how cams and gears create movement. Students then develop accurate 3D models of their ideas using Tinkercad, preparing their designs for fabrication through 3D printing and laser cutting. After prototyping, they refine their concepts and produce detailed technical drawings and scaled plans of the automata components, including precise dimensions and assembly views.

This ongoing project is helping students strengthen their creativity, engineering understanding, and problem-solving skills as they move from concept to fully functioning models.
