Why read?

Today I asked a fifth-grade class why we read. Here are their answers:

  • To learn
  • For fun
  • Because we are told to
  • To learn new words (or as I put it, expand your vocabulary)
  • Improves your spelling
  • To grow your imagination
  • To make you understand other people’s feelings (increase empathy)

I would add that reading helps kids self-regulate, builds focus, and for me in particular, leads me to more questions than answers. This is the moment when I tell you, as a teacher, every year it is more challenging and I would argue, more important to read. For all the reasons those students told me and more. Reading helps us understand the world, each other, and ourselves better. It shows students they aren’t alone in their struggles and their celebrations.

If you have a moment during the coming vacation, please take time to read with your child. This might be reading to them. Or having your child read to you. Or the whole family, sitting in the same room, just reading. Not reading on your phone, kids interpret that as not being present. Talk about what you are reading and why you read. Ask them the same questions.

Your children are amazing and they surprise me with their insights daily. Enjoy some reading time together!
