Divisional Plans for The Start of The Year
  • All School News

This is a time of change. I know, no one wants to hear this, especially after the year we have had. But we all see it, feel it, and know it! Winter is settling in with colder mornings, sweaters and boots, fireplaces and hot drinks. We are all getting ready for our vacation time, and we are honestly all ready for a change of pace. For those of us in international schools, this is the time when we call attention to Leavers, Stayers and Maybes.

Dear Lincoln Families,

I hope all of you received the message I sent yesterday, July 29th, explaining our overall plan for the start of the school year. In addition, today, we are sending detailed messages from our three Principals to explain the divisional plans for the start of the year. Please read the relevant letters for your family carefully so that you understand what is expected. We are delighted to be starting a new school year and thrilled that we can return to campus soon! We take the health and safety of our community very seriously and will be doing everything we can to protect one another.

There is no question that we are starting this year with many feelings. Many of us very likely experienced a range of feelings in the past 18 months - frustration, loneliness, anxiety, as well as acceptance, contentment, maybe even peace. It is normal to feel some trepidation as we face the new year, partly because the uncertainty about the pandemic continues, and also because going back to campus is a big change. Students and teachers alike are probably both excited and nervous about what it means to return to campus in person. Questions abound, like “Can I trust that I will be safe if everyone returns to campus? How vulnerable am I if some of my friends and colleagues aren’t vaccinated? What if the Delta variant increases in Buenos Aires?” and also ambivalence such as “I really liked staying at home and having lunch with my family. I am not sure I want to be seen by everyone all the time. I don’t remember how to make friends anymore.” These and other questions, feelings, wonderings are all part of our return to school and return to campus.

Let me say clearly that we will not ignore the emotional side of our humanity. It is important for all of us to pay attention to one another, to listen, understand, and consider perspectives different from our own. We will do our best to support one another as we all learn how to return to school, return to work, return to being face to face on campus. My guess is that there are many among us who are eager for a new way to do school. In truth, the concept of school as we once knew it is no longer relevant, effective, or even feasible any more. Many specialists in the educational world are writing about this and urging bold change for schools. This is an exciting and incredible opportunity for Lincoln to continue our strategic transformation! I will write more about this in the coming months and share with you our ongoing efforts to keep Lincoln at the forefront of school improvement.

So, let’s begin this year with open hearts and minds! Thank you for your support always!

Sincerely,

Madeleine Maceda Heide
