middle school

message from the ms principal

Dear MS Parents, Students and Staff,

I hope you and your families are well.  September has started and with it lots of weather changes.  Some days we will experience sunshine, rain and cold winds all in the course of the morning. As we are using our outdoor spaces and keeping our indoor spaces well-ventilated, please make sure that your child comes with layers of clothing that will keep them sufficiently warm during the day.

student voice:

This week in middle school our advisory groups have been working to prepare for our first all middle school assembly next week.  Each group will share an original presentation of their group and the assembly will be student run.  We want our students to be active participants in the life of the school and to feel like their ideas are valued and followed up on.  Another way that students have exercised their voice this week was in our first student council meeting.  There was lots of animated discussion as the students contributed their ideas for a halloween celebration in the month of October.   As soon as we have more details ironed out, we will send a communication to our families about this event.

map testing:

Yesterday our students started our fall session of MAP testing.  This is an adaptive, computerized test in the areas of mathematics, English language usage and reading.  This test does not affect student’s class grades and students can take as long as they need on the test.  The information we receive from this test will help teachers with their planning and instruction as well as helping students to set goals and become aware of their own academic growth and progress over time.  For more information about the MAP test, consult the fact sheet (available in 13 different languages) below.

Now that school is in full motion, you may start to notice the answer from your child to the question "How was your day at school?" may have started becoming short or similar. If you ask a variety of targeted questions instead, you may be able to learn a little bit more about what school is like for your child and your child may also enjoy the thought provoking conversation as well! Here is a list of questions to help you enhance learning about their day. I suggest asking one different question each day.
