HIGH SCHOOL

Dear HS Community,

There’s no better time to celebrate the core of learning at Lincoln as the ALLs (Attributes of a Lincoln Learner) are on full display, both in and out of the classroom. The end of the 3rd Quarter provides a time for reflection, celebration, and action to support all students and their learning.

Midterm Progress Reports and Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences

Today, April 4th, marks the end of the third quarter and the publication of progress reports, which will be emailed to all families. It is important to know that the progress reports are not permanent grades; rather, they represent each student’s summative grade at this time. They provide important feedback for students to celebrate what is working and discover ways to improve. While these grades will not appear on a permanent transcript, they provide concrete data as to where students are in their learning, while allowing time in the last quarter to improve.

To empower students to act as self-navigators, we encourage them to communicate directly with their teachers and to reach out when they need help, clarification, or have questions about their learning or the course material.

To support at home, we urge families to meet with the teachers in the upcoming Parent Student Teacher conferences, which will take place on April 10th from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm and April 11 from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, either in person or virtually.  Each conference lasts 10 minutes, and students are strongly encouraged to attend. Please remember that you must sign up through your PowerSchool Parent Portal before April 7th at 3:30 pm - refer to the following detailed instructions for support. The conference scheduler will close on April 7th.

To our Seniors, whose last day of classes is April 25, 2025, we strongly urge them to reflect on their performance during the Mock Exams and work with their teachers as they revise material for the IB Exams that will take place from April 29 to May 21, 2025. While the April break provides opportunities for our Seniors to be “off schedule”, we can not emphasize enough the importance of their intentionally planning and using their time to study, revise, and practice.

I often say to our students that their investment of time and attention directly relates to the positive outcomes that result - where we place our focus and attention becomes what we tend to. Best wishes to our Seniors as they tend to these closing challenges of their high school studies.

Condors in the Gym and on the Field!

This is a SAAC Tournament weekend with our Basketball student athletes in Montevideo and Tennis players in Curitiba.  All the best, as they represent Lincoln as role models of sportsmanship, teamwork, and pride. Safe travels!

Lincoln has been hosting the SAAC Track and Field Invitational these past few days - it’s an opportunity for students and families to celebrate the individuals and team members in each of the track and field competitions.  In the opening to the SAAC tournament, I welcomed the teams and student athletes. Having spent much of my career coaching track and field and cross country, I deeply believe in the power of school athletics and activities to support students' learning, well-being, and personal growth. During the opening, I shared with the students that track and field has much to teach us: 1) the greatest competition is often within yourself, 2) rest is as important as intense work and both are required for growth and endurance, and 3) we go further and harder when we go with others.

Service Learning in Action

Congratulations to Lincoln HS students Alex Ahumada and Mael Ruiz Grol, who have been selected for an AMISA Grant of $1000 to support their service project to STOP Chagas. They are developing an App to raise awareness and help people who live in affected areas. With their impressive plans of AI integration and their collaboration with Lincoln teachers and academics from local Universities, Alex and Mael will use the funds to pursue their mission to raise awareness and to stop Chagas disease.

The AMISA Global Citizen Grant and Recognition program recognizes students from AMISA Member Schools that are making exemplary contributions to their community through the actions and spirit of Global Citizenship. The program aims to recognize the efforts of a school-based service-learning program, which has led to a greater understanding of social issues, locally and globally, and addresses specific needs by engaging in positive change within their local communities.

Our Why in the High School

By placing student learning at the center of all we do, we see learning as “the intentional process of making sense of the world through exploration, expression, and reflection. The journey of life-long learning is transformative, inspires action, and opens new pathways.” We empower Lincoln High School students to think critically, research deeply, and communicate clearly—becoming self-navigators and agents of change in their own lives and their community.

On behalf of all the teachers and staff of the high school, thank you for your ongoing support.

#AllTogether

Warmest regards,

Dave Nelson, Ed.D.
