Healthy Eating: Fostering lifelong healthy habits in the elementary

On Friday, October 21 we held a parent coffee and asked parents for their ideas on how to support healthy eating while children are at school.  On Friday, November 4th I met with a small group of teachers and we talked about those ideas and are ready to put some of them into action.

At school we are going to host a week where we will have healthy snacks available for students to try every day at morning recess.  The foods will be fruits, vegetables, and other healthy finger foods (protein, complex carbohydrates, etc.).  This is tentatively scheduled for the week of, November 28-December 2.  We have taken into consideration all allergies when developing the ideas for these snacks.  As they try these snacks, you can help children think about expanding their food preferences by asking questions:
Questions you ask could be:

  1. Did you take any healthy risks and try anything new for snack today?
  2. Was there any food that surprised you?  Did you like that surprise or was it something you were not expecting?
  3. Were there any snacks you would recommend for me?  Why?

Additionally, on the other Friday in December (December 16) we will have a Fun Food Friday where we will introduce new snacks to students at the morning recess.  We will monitor and see what students like and then start to incorporate some of those foods into the lunch in the cafeteria.

I am also going to meet with Cooks (the cafeteria managers) to talk about some ideas we have for how to increase the appeal of the food that is served, and to amend the portions to be more appropriate for young children.

Lastly, through our homeroom WhatsApp groups some PAL representatives will start sharing healthy snack recipes that you can try with your children.  Please look for recommendations starting soon and talk to your children about the snacks they try next week.

ES uniform

Following consultation last semester with parents and students through student council, we are pleased to be able to share an updated uniform policy which has a new uniform option available as requested by students and parents. We are adding the option of navy blue shirts with the Lincoln logo. Please click here to see the uniform guidelines.

A few reminders from the document to help keep us all looking smart.

  • Bottoms: Students need to wear navy blue pants, skirts, skorts or mid thigh shorts. Pants/trousers may not have embroidery, patches, decorations, holes or patterns. No denim.
  • Sweaters/Sweatshirts/Hoodies: Any type of plain navy blue material with or without the Lincoln logo. All outer tops should not have embroidery, logos other than the Lincoln logo, patches, decorations, holes or patterns.

Please help us by ensuring that students are arriving wearing the correct uniform.

Upcoming parent coffee:  Supporting students on learning expeditions

On Friday, November 18 at 8:30AM we are holding a parent coffee to talk more about our learning expeditions in Grades 3, 4, and 5.  These overnight trips may be the first time that your child has ever been away from home and we are here to support you and your children with this exciting adventure.  We will share more details about the learning expeditions and talk through what we are doing to prepare students and what you might do at home.  This parent coffee is open to parents of students of all ages even though we will focus mostly on the Grades 3, 4, and 5 trips.

Mundial

We at Lincoln are planning to support our host nation team in the upcoming football World Cup! We would like to invite families to attend a community breakfast and welcome parents to attend a showing of the Argentina vs. Saudi Arabia match on Tuesday, November 22, kick off at 7:00 am. Parents who choose to stay for the whole match may keep your child(ren) out of class to watch it with you.
Additionally, some of our Grade 2, Grade 4, and Grade 5 students will be watching the match together and will resume their normal schedule once the match ends. Students who do not want to watch the match will have an alternate activity in the homeroom. Due to their ages, attention span, and movement needs, we will have a normal class schedule for all younger grades in Elementary.  If you choose to keep your child home for that morning, please notify the Elementary Office.

Students are allowed to wear their favorite jerseys on Tuesday, November 22 and on every Friday throughout the duration of the World Cup.

SWIMMING SEASON IS ALMOST HERE!

Dear Elementary School Parents,

We would like to inform you that on November 14th we will begin our swimming program!  Swimming will continue until March 10th. This program will take place during all P.E classes.

Students must bring the following items:
∙ Bathing suit
∙ Swimming cap
∙ Flip-Flops/Sandals
∙ Towel

Every item must be clearly labeled with your child’s name in a swimming bag or backpack.

In the event of rain, we will move P.E. inside. Therefore on all P.E. days, please make sure your child brings appropriate clothing (and swim gear) for both indoor P.E. and for swimming. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Swimming is such a wonderful example of a life skill that promotes physical and emotional health.  Lincoln School is fortunate to have the facilities and teachers to make this happen.  Proficiency and confidence in swimming are positive characteristics that go hand in hand.  As swimming is an integral part of the P.E. curriculum, it is important that your child be prepared to swim for every scheduled class. If your child cannot swim due to a medical condition, please provide a doctor’s excuse.  Otherwise, we will encourage all students to swim!

It’s going to be a great swimming season at Lincoln!

Sincerely,
Ms Silvi and Mr Nico
