Lincoln Talent Takes the Stage: Grade 8 Student Performs Cello at Iconic Buenos Aires Venue
One of our middle school students, Amira Taras, took part in the fourth edition of Clásica Generación Z, a cycle of academic music featuring young performers of our country. The concert took place in the Palacio Libertad, previously known as the CCK.
At Lincoln, we inspire our learners to become great communicators, able to express complex ideas creatively. Amira Taras, Grade 8 student, embraced this attribute fully with her performance at the largest and most significant cultural center in Buenos Aires and Latin America. On September 22, she participated in the fourth edition of Clásica Generación Z, an academic music concert that showcased young talents under 18 in the Palacio Libertad, previously known as the Centro Cultural Néstor Kirchner.
During her cello performance, in the Salón de Honor, Amira presented pieces by Tchaikovski (Chanson Triste, op. 40 n.º 2) and Saint-Saëns (Allegro appassionato, op. 43). “I felt honored to be able to play in this important and beautiful venue,” she shared during an interview.
Though slightly nervous, Amira gained confidence and marveled at the experience of playing with fellow musicians, who also displayed their piano and violin skills by playing Debussy, Chopin, Ginastera, Jachaturián, Castro, and Kreisler-Pugnani. She added: “It was also nice to get to know other musicians in my age group. I was inspired by the other performers.”
After months of preparation, getting ready in May, Amira had the opportunity to showcase her skills and learn something else in the way. “She has worked extremely hard and learned self resilience and independence through her experience,” explained her mother. When asked what she gained from the experience, Amira highlighted the power of hard work: “It always pays off.”
Amira’s journey as a musician goes way back. At only five years old, she started playing the piano. When she turned nine, she took a liking for cello, and at ten she started performing chamber music, a form of classical music composed for a small group of instruments. “There was always music around me when I was little because my mother is a pianist and piano teacher,” she admitted.
That was the beginning. Since then she has also studied piano at an intermediate level and participated in multiple festivals, such as the Latin American Cello Festival of the Beethoven Foundation in Buenos Aires and the Piano Encounter (EPI) at the Arts and Music Campus in Bariloche. In 2023, she took part in the Balaton Music Festival, Hungary, and in the 100 Celli Jubiläumskonzert concert in Berlin, during which she was able to present herself as a promising young cello player. And her experience does not end there. Amira has been a performer at annual events organized by the Musikschule City West in Berlin and, in 2022, she won first prize in the Jugend Musiziert Berlin Competition in the “cello” category.
Now, as a Lincoln student, she embraces all the school opportunities to continue exploring her passion. Last year, Amira played piano to accompany the Lincoln Choir. “That helped me improve my performance skills,” she shared. Nowadays, she is part of the AMIS after school activity, which prepares students to participate in The Association for Music in International Schools. She is also auditioning for the AMIS Latin American Honor Orchestra, to be part of a performance held in Brazil. “I hope to represent Lincoln in the orchestra next year,” she commented.
When asked how she would describe a Lincoln artist, she highlighted the importance of independence. And while she continues studying and searching for challenging opportunities to gain more of that, she surrounds herself in music, attending classes where she learns to collaborate with others and grow as a creative producer.
