Lincoln Students Learn From Professional Musicians
Three experts lead this after-school activity that takes students’ skills and musicality to the next level! Learn how they enrich our learner’s educational experience!
It’s been over two years since Playing with the Pros started. In this after-school activity, 35 middle and high school students learn from three professional musicians from Del Norte Big Band: a group with a ten-year career in the industry. This week, they prepared a spectacular show for all students and even invited middle school musicians to perform with them St. Thomas, from the famous saxophonist Sonny Rollins.
Before starting, Lucho Gomez Oromi, coach and member of Del Norte Big Band, commented: “Today is special. After two years of practicing, we are glad to invite them to perform with us.” He then, quite moved, added: “We are so proud to have our students on stage with us. They will be able to experience playing with a professional orchestra!”
While Andres Hayes teaches sax and clarinets, Damian Carrasco teaches the drummers and Lucho Gomez Oromi teaches brass. “This after-school activity is adding diversity to our program and allowing our students to develop skills as thinkers and researchers, communicators, and self-navigators,” explained Sara Zohoré, Athletics and Activities Director.
“We are lucky to have these pros teaching our students each week,” commented Christy Wanamaker, Middle and High School Music Teacher. Del Norte Big Band has a history with Lincoln. The group not only uses the school’s campus to rehearse weekly but also performs for the community every so often, enhancing everyone's experience with impressive jazz shows! “This impacts the community as we are trying to provide quality music opportunities both in school and out,” concluded Ms.Wanamaker.
