Grade 6 students addressed global challenges! As part of their social studies class, our learners divided into various teams and chose some of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations, to create a project with an action component. This was part of an end-of-the-school-year assignment.

For three weeks, our middle school learners did their research and planning before showcasing how their project had an impact on the community. One of the students created a stress kit to address the Good Health and Wellbeing goal. By delivering tools and leading a how to make a stress ball workshop, she taught her peers about stress management and handling attention.

Two students promoted the fourth goal, quality education, by reading to the elementary school kids and encouraging them to make a habit of it. Another team set a Water drip system competition in class to create a deeper understanding of water conservation and moderation and work towards the Clean Water and Sanitation goal.

To address Responsible Production and Consumption, another group created Newspaper bags and Bird Feeders with recycled materials; while another team approached the same goal by upcycling materials, for example turning a shirt into a bag. The projects were as diverse as there were numerous. From a Clean Energy workshop with wind turbines, to informative talks and displays about clean water and climate change.

“They all worked with enthusiasm and commitment on these projects,” Diana Perez, social studies teacher at Lincoln, shared with us. This really showed in the work of the team that pursued the fifth goal of the SDGs. Guilia, Mateo and Brunella focused on gender equality. During their research, they learned that millions of people worldwide cannot afford to buy menstrual products and do not have access to water and sanitation facilities to manage their menstrual health. As a result, 1 in 5 young people miss school and many suffer health consequences.

With this in mind, they sold baked goods in exchange for hygiene products and managed to collect 1,000 packages, which is approximately 12,000 pads! With the help of Pandemia de Amor Argentina, a non-profit organization, some of it was donated to Pancita Feliz, a community center located in the CAVA neighborhood that hosts teens in need of these resources. The rest of the pads will be distributed monthly to that community center and also to toy libraries of Potencialidades ONG, an Non-Governmental Organization that creates spaces for play and support of the youth.
