Use of energy drinks

Dear Lincoln School Families,

We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to share that school staff members have observed an increase in the consumption of energy drinks among our students, particularly in younger age groups. This trend is concerning, and we would like to take a moment to explain why these beverages are not recommended for school-aged children under any circumstances.

An energy drink typically contains large amounts of caffeine, added sugars, other additives, and legal stimulants (guarana, taurine, and L-carnitine). These stimulants can increase alertness, attention, and energy. They can also increase blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. Energy drinks are often used by students for an energy boost. Because children’s bodies and nervous systems are still developing, they are especially sensitive to these substances (CDC, 2024).

Regular or excessive consumption of energy drinks can lead to a range of negative health effects. These may include headaches, stomach discomfort, and dehydration (Columbia University, 2022). From a behavioral and academic standpoint, students may experience sleep disturbances, restlessness, anxiety, irritability, and difficulty maintaining attention and focus in class. Poor or lack of sleep alone can significantly impact learning, memory, and emotional regulation (John Hopkins Medicine, 2024).

Another important concern is the potential for dependence. As students become accustomed to the stimulating effects of these drinks, they may feel a need to consume them more frequently, which can create an unhealthy cycle that is difficult to break (Cedars Sinai, 2025).

At Lincoln, we are committed to promoting a healthy and supportive environment for all students. We kindly ask for your partnership in addressing this issue. We would also like to ask our older high school students for help in setting an example for our younger students and to avoid consuming energy drinks altogether.

As alternatives, we recommend that students stay hydrated with water throughout the day and consider nutritious options such as milk or natural fruit juices in moderation. Ensuring that children get adequate sleep, maintain balanced meals, and develop consistent daily routines can also greatly support their energy levels and overall well-being.

If you have any questions or would like additional information or resources on this topic, please do not hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your continued support and collaboration in helping us safeguard the health and well-being of our students.

Warm regards,

Lincoln Nurses
