THE TIME THE PRINCIPAL SWORE TO NEVER PLAY SOFTBALL

Henry Whitney shared an unforgettable moment of his time at Lincoln. Prepare for a trip down memory lane to the origins of our school: the American Community School.

Though school may become a distant chapter of our lives, there are always some anecdotes that stick with us. Henry Whitney never forgot the hit he accidentally received in the head from none other than the Principal! Back then, from 1946 to 1959, he was a student at the American Community School, the institution now known as Lincoln.

It was during the annual family picnic at Ward College. The fathers vs. sons softball game was about to begin, which was the high point of the event. “I was watching the game close to third base when Mr. Homedahl, a parent, and principal, came up to bat. He took a swing, the bat slipped out of his hand and hit me on the side of the head”. Whitney recalled during an interview. “I was knocked out for a second but recovered with a bleeding cut on my temple. The duty doctor gave me a couple of stitches and some nice parent took me home. I had no bad after-results. But Mr. Holmdahl swore he would never play softball again in his life”.
