How Our Students Nurture the Community

Our elementary school students recently took a significant step in their service-learning journey through a cross-grade collaboration designed to truly live out the meaning of community.

To put the concept of "community" to the test, K3/4 teacher Gimena Iturriega, Grade 1 homeroom teacher Lorena Gonzalez, and Spanish teacher Pia Lebuis launched an initiative to connect learners with the people who work behind the scenes. Our #ThinkersAndResearchers began engaging with the community right in front of them: the maintenance staff, cafeteria workers, nurses, security guards, and administrators. This multi-layered collaboration included personal interviews, gamified learning, and the creation of portraits to show gratitude.

The result was a visible shift in school culture. Our students now navigate the campus as a personal social ecosystem, moving with greater awareness and respect for all the members who build the magic of our school.

To support our service-learning goals, we partnered with Inspire Citizens, a group that co-creates student-centered experiences for future-focused global citizenship. They have prepared an in-depth article detailing this project. Read the full piece to learn more about our students’ engagement.
