Kindergarten and first-grade students are taking their learning beyond the classroom by getting to know their school community on a deeper level. Last week, they interviewed Gustavo and Jonatan, members of the Security team. This initiative is part of the Rights and Responsibilities Unit from Grade 1 and the Building Community unit from Kinder 4, both held in English and Spanish.

So far, our thinkers and researchers have interviewed a wide range of staff members, including the school's guards, nurses, maintenance team, suppliers, cooks, and cleaning crew. Through these conversations, the students are learning about the responsibilities each person has and how they contribute to a strong and supportive community.

“The main goal is for first graders to think about and get to know all the people who contribute to and collaborate in the greater Lincoln community,” Lorena Gonzalez, Grade 1 teacher, shared with us.  This project is a great example of service learning in action. The collaboration between the classes will culminate in the first graders teaching what they've learned to the kindergarteners. They will design board games and create a story about the school community.
